What does battles really mean?

I was wondering on a card's text like Yubel - Ultimate Nightmare what does the word battles mean.does it mean Yubel - Ultimate Nightmare is attacking a monster or does it mean a monster's attacking it. or is it both.

i think its like the "is the glass half empty or half full" it all depends on your point of view

it means both and the attack isin't negated in order for it to be a battle!! ^_^
