Vain means that you are concerned with how you look. A vain person cares only the s/he looks 'cool'. You should use a dictionary.

People that crave flatteries and acknowledgment that how they look is great and that they are attractive, or more attractive than someone else.

As people said, its not necessarily self serving, that is fine. It is ok to have a high image of yourself. It is also ok to want the best for yourself as well. Vanity is of the physical. It is thinking that you are more beautiful, specifically in the 7 deadly sins, it would refer to Lucifer's vanity. Who thought he was more beautiful than God.

Vanity is an offshoot of pride.

To be vain is to care about ones appearance, ones accomplishments to the exclusion of all else. To be vain is to consider what anyone else has ever done to be inferior to whatever you have done. To be vain is to prefer ones mirror to a friend's eyes, unless the friend's eyes are worshipfully directed at you.

To take undeserved pride in your self. In the Bible it refers to those people who take credit for what God has done.

A good example of vanity is for a good looking guy (or girl) to take pride in his/her looks....which in reality they had nothing to do with. He/she was born to look the way they look.
