  2. The ratings are used in conjunction with the handicap system and are rated through the USGA. The rating is what a scratch golfer should score on average for that course and that set of tees. The slope is a difficulty rating.

Used in the handicap calculation the ratings will give you a differential score that is then averaged and multiplied by 96% to arrive at your handicap. If you want a better description of this visit http://www.GolfFoundations.com/handicap.... You can use the calculator there to get your handicap.

  3. Rating of a course is based upon the score that a scratch golfer would shoot on that golf course under normal circumstances . Slope is based upon the difficulty compared with a hypothetical normal course. Normal is around 120. Difficulty takes into account, rough, width of fairways, length of holes, placement of bunkers, size of greens, hazards and obstacles,  the location of ponds and lakes which are in play and the amount of carry needed to reach the fairways.

  4. Course rating is what an expert golfer should be able to shoot on the course in normal conditions.  Slope is a way of comparing courses one to another.  115 is a pretty easy course, 135 is getting pretty difficult and 140 to 150 are crazy hard to score on.  Slope takes in a lot more factors than course rating like placement of hazards and psychological intimidation of how a hole sets up.

  5. the average slope of a golf course is 120.  so 115 would be a little easier than average.

so, if your handicap was 5 and you're playing that course with that slope of 115, they would probably give you 4 strokes above the rating.  if the slope was 120 they would give you the 5 strokes for your 5 handicap, and if the slope was say 125 or 130 they'd probably give you 6 strokes.

there is a mathematical formula but this gives you a general idea of  how it would work.

  6. it determines the difficulty of the course and you also use it to determine your handicap
