What does cynical actually mean? ?

i told this girl on another website that i didn't think this character would wear a bikini and she said i was being cynical. in what way am i being cynical? call me thick but i don't get it. i know basically what cynical means. the girl said she's from a hot country where everyone wears bikinis. i'm british, the characters also british. how am i being cynical? surely i'm being realistic, and she's being cynical.

The word "cynical" implies a negative point of view or doubting.  Christians said, for example, that Jesus rose from the dead and rolled away the stone.  Cynics said that somebody just came and stole his body.  A believer might say "God spoke to me" and a cynic might reply "No you are just losing your mind".

It basically means that you see the worst side of people or situations. I don't think the girl who called you it knows what it means either.

Being cynical is believing the worst of human nature and motives.  I don't see how it relates to whether or not someone wears a bikini.

I have noticed that people do tend to like to use 'big' words when they have no idea what that word means in the first place. Like in this case. Also, I have noticed that some people here are quite sensitive about true opinions. Thus, I have 'learnt the hard way' to tone down my comments. I think in this case you were being ' Factual '. But your opinion has not gone down well. Don't let this incident get to you. It's happened. So just move on. You positive contribution means more than getting 'upset' over a comment / remark.
