I'm watching the Cubs, and they said Scott Eyre has been designated for assignment because of Kerry Wood returning from the DL. What does it mean? I hear it all the time and just never thought to figure it out.

  1. The person is removed from the 40 man roster and the team has 10 days to deal them, outright them to minors or release them is they refuse the outright assignment.

  2. It means you are assigned to do something in a different baseball lvl. Like if someone get injured you are designated to fill there place, if you are slumping, you are designated to the minors for a while, if something is happening in a guys family like death or a baby being born, a minor leager is designated to take there place when they come back.

  3. The Cubs have 10 days to trade, release, or put him on waivers.

  4. It's a way of getting rid of a player. The team has ten days to deal him to another team (or country); failing that, they can offer him a minor league assignment. If he declines that, he gets released and is a free agent.

  5. The players who are designated for assignment are sent to the minors.

  6. It means you will go to the minors if you say yes. If no - then they will release you.

  7. What it means is if he approves to go back to AAA thats where he goes, if not, then they'll release him, and anyone else can pick him up.

  8. It means he was let go by the team.
