Advocate is another term used for lawyer.  So when someone says "I'm playing the devil's advocate", it means they're going to give an alternate solution that may be a little on the shady side.  So playing a lawyer for the devil or the shady idea.

The saying of 'I'm just being devil's advocate' basically means that you are only acting in a way that is contrary to what the individual you are speaking to believes/propogates.

In essence, a devil's advocate is someone who agrees with the exact opposite of what someone else believes.

No, no, no.  

When someone plays "The devil's advocate", he is presenting a side of a question or issue that he does not necessarily support, or exploring an unfavorable possibility no one has considered, or wants to think about, because it either hasn't been foreseen, or is presumed unlikely.  In common useage, it has no connotations of what is right or wrong.  

Imagine the first time anyone tried the "fake bank check scam".   You receive what appears to be a bank check for $5,000, with the idea that you deposit it and send someone $4,500.    You ask me about it.  

In that case, I might well say "Just playing the Devil's Advocate here, but what if that bank check is a forgery? You'll have sent off the $4,500, and your bank is going to want it back from you, and probably charge you with a crime."

You don't want to hear that, because if it's true, you don't get your $500.
