I ask this because there are MD's, Phd's, etc.

  7. There are three ways to get to use doctor in front of your name.

    One is to get an MD (or MBBS/ MBChB in the UK) and be a medical doctor.

    Two is to sit a PhD and study for a thesis. Once you pass this then you can put doctor in front of your name but you are not a medical doctor, but one in whatever subject you chose to study.

    The third way is to get a honorory degree, but not many people get to be one this way.

  8. Doctor is latin for teacher. It technically just means someone who is proficient in a certain area, such as medicine, psychology, education, etc.
