What does dress code in effect mean?

A friend of mine is going to an afterparty after a backstreet boys concert (yeah I know, don't laugh) and it says "dress code in effect" What exactly does that mean?

  1. Usually dresser casual clothes. Make sure they are clean, & not ripped and No sweats. A pair of dark jeans and a nice top will work, or a summery dress.

    I just don't understand the "effect" parts.

  4. the have a dress code and if you don't wear what they say you won't be able to go, or you'll look like an idiot. i think it's probably fancy, so don't go in jeans and a tshirt

  5. It means you have to dress nice. No jeans, no sandals, no shorts. They also use the term "dress to impress" instead of "dress code in effect" sometimes.
