What does energize the starting motor mean and how do you do it?

Usually by turning the key. This connects the starter motor to the electrical system and the starter motor cranks the engine. After the engine is running releasing the key disengages the starter motor.

When you energize the starting motor it means when you turn the key switch you send battery voltage from the battery thru the starter relay to the starter to start the enging turning.
