  1. if he wins us open i think he would stay as no. 1

  2. If both Federer and Nadal reach the finals of the remaining 4 Masters Series, 1 Grand Slam and Masters Cup, Federer has to win all of these 6 events to remain number 1. Tough, huh?

If Nadal only manages to reach the semis of the 4 Master Series, Federer could maintain his #1 rank if he wins the USO, 1 Master Series, Basel and Masters Cup and reach the finals of the 3 other Master Series. Really tough.

I have not worked out the Djokovic role yet.

What I am saying is that his ranking will also depend on how Nadal and Djokovic perform.

  3. A bunch. Cincinnati, US Open, Beijing's  just to defend his points. Aussie Open, Indian Wells, minimum.  Provided Nadal, or Djokovic fall flat , and not win any match.

  4. He has to defend 1850 points Masters Events toronto and Cincinnati and the US open. After these three event in case he successful in defending his cincy and Us open or even winning Toronto masters he will only gain 150 points. If he wins the Gold medal in Olympics he will get 400 points. So the most additional point he can get after these 4 events is 550 point making his total points to 7150 points.

Currently Nadal has 6055 point after winning wimbledon. But he withdrew from Stuttgart and therfore will lose 250 points comes the release of next week rankings. He will have 5805 points in total. This is the scenario. He has to defend 225 points by reaching the semis of toronto masters last year. In cincinnati he has to defend a measly 5 points and 150 points  by reaching the 4th round of the Us open last year. So the total points he has to defend from these 3 events is merely 380 points.

If and only if he reaches the finals of the three events even without winning any , he will gain 125 points in toronto plus 345 points in cincinnati and 550 points in the Us Open.

Therefore he will add about 900 points to his 5805 points current ranking points. The total will be 6705 points. Then he can catch up with federer's ranking points.

Nadal should try his best to win these three events so he can finally secure the number one spot.

  5. you get a certain number of points for winning different level events like masters, slams, and challengers, but you also get points for progressing in the tournament.  federer could easily stay number one if he continues to make finals and winning even if he does not win slams.  it may also depend on how well nadal and the rest of the field does in those events.

  6. Win everything he won last year so he doesn't lose anymore points and Nadal does not win any of the other tournaments Federer doesn't win.  if Federer wins all the remaining tournaments that he won last year and add one or two more master's series tournaments to that, he shold be good at #1 till year end.
