  1. I am in the auto industry and I'm amazed at the answers I've read!  ABS is an acronym for Anti-lock Braking System.  An ABS has sensors on either two or four wheels.  When you apply the brakes, the sensors detect a wheel lock and will quickly release braking pressure, then return braking pressure to normal.  This keeps the car from skidding, which keeps you in control of the car.  There are a few different ABS used by auto manufacturers.  The least expensive to use is the rear wheel ABS, which keeps only the rear wheels from locking.  This is used on larger trucks, where locking the rear is very unsafe.  Some cars have a three channel ABS.  Think of each channel as an ABS.  Each of the two front wheels has their own channel and both of the rear wheels are on one channel (three channels).  The Infiniti Coupe has a four channel system.  Each wheel has its own ABS, so four wheels = four channels.  This is the best ABS available, since each wheel can have the ABS work independent of what the other wheels are doing.  This also decreases the stopping distance and increases the braking power.

    I hope this helps.

  2. you have a wheel speed sensor on each wheel and if one doesnt match the others then your abs will release pressure (bleed) on the one that does not match to make it stop skidding then stabilize the pressure at maximum grip

    ABS means Anti-Lock Braking System

As a side note I've read what Greg wrote and he is incorrect on the four system thing. All of your sensors make the system. Snap-On ShopKey 5 will tell you this. As will  a MODIS scanner, Determinator scanner, not to mention the dealership. Your transmission has a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) , and an OSS (output speed sensor) (among other speed sensors) that also tell the computer how fast you are moving. The computer uses all of these sensors to determine whether or not your vehicle is skidding or spinning the tires and will correct it. Spinning is controlled by your traction control system(if equipped)

  3. ABS= anti locking brakes, this is a great plus for your next car and could save your life. Cars tend to use the phrase all wheel drive and the designation of four wheel drive is commonly used for trucks.

  4. it means you have anti lock brakes. you don't have to pump the pedal and you can brake and steer at the same time

  5. that means you have anti-lock brakes in all 4 wheels.

  6. 4 wheel abs means that the anti-lock brake system can independantly control all 4 wheels at the same time verses older cheaper rwabs systems that were commonly fitted to pickups and vans that controlled only rear wheel brakes to prevent brake lock up when the vehicle was unloaded and the rear brakes tended to lock up prematurally.

  7. 4 wheel abs has nothing to do with 4 wheel drive.abs has to do with the brake system.meaning anti lock brakes.full time 4 wheel drive means the wheels on the vehicle all move the vehicle with power from the engine.on a 2 wheel drive only the rear wheels would do this
