Free speech is always curtailed in wartime, because it is especially harmful to be critical of the government during a war - nationalism needs to be at its peak, at such a time.  Also, you don't want the press accidentally leaking military info to the enemy,through the media.  ('Loose lips sink ships.')

  3. Well free speech (more conclusively freedom of the press) goes back to the American Revolution. You see when King George began taxing the colonies heavily, the newspapers rose up and cried out against these injustices. Those writers are the ones' who initially roused the American spirit. Freedom of speech is necessary during war time so that the public is heard and the government does not run on it's own agenda. The voice of the people is important. In America, all men are created equal. Meaning, if the majority is against something then the majority should rule. However, I must admit that sometimes I feel the press goes too far.
