Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Global Warming is a theory and a religion.  The theory is that the ozone layer of the earth is depleting causing the earth to warm up.  Some "Einstein" decided to write a paper about it and now Global Warming and Loving Mother Earth is a religion, even though there is no hard scientific evidence to support it.  The truth is that the atmosphere of the earth has always flucutated.  We have no affect on it whatsoever.

Bob is a little off.  Actually in centuries their will be very little noticeable difference if present trends continue.  The earth has been warming for thousands of years.  During that warming carbon dioxide, a green house gas, has steadily increased in concentration.  There have been minor cold spells during that time.  There seems to have been a recent trend in warming.  Those people that used to say humans were responsible for the cooling when that was the trend are the same people that say humans are now responsible for global warming.  It is so idiodiotic, I am sure you have a hard time believing me.  Sometimes I have a hard time as well.  It is difficult for me to understand because I am not a hater of humans and industry.  Responsible care of our environment will insure we all live happier healthier lives.  Those responsibilities do not entail falling for the latest scare tactics from those with political agendas.
