Despite a man's grandiose self-concept as a thinker and a philosophical entity, he is in reality an animal, decaying and involuntarily emitting odors and secretions constantly.  A gnat is therefore a symbol of those reminders of one's own mortality and morbidity, which one can sometimes ignore, but which nonetheless constantly irritate and distract.  

    A gnat is a juxtaposition to the spotless robe or the crystalline pool.
