The Emperor Constantine heard or saw these words in a vision before a battle.  They're Latin, and they mean "In this sign you will conquer."  The "sign" was the sign of the cross, and so Constantine understood this to mean that he should display the cross during battles so that he would win.  And yes, it should read "In hoc signum vinces."


  2. I believe you spelled that phrase wrong. It should read "hoc signo vinces."

    Hoc signo vinces means "in this sign you shall conquer."
