What does in transit mean for UPS?

I ordered a package, it was initially rescheduled. it said it would be at my house on the 25th, which it is 1:43 am of the 25th at my home. So i just looked at the tracking page, and it says that its now "in transit". That last scanning on the record was in LA, at 3:05 am, on the 23rd. So it hasnt been scanned for almost 48 hrs but its now in transit. So the question i have is, what does "in transit" mean, and also if you could, why wasnt it scanned for almost 48 hrs? thanks
