My belief was boxers are classified based on their body weight. But my friends says its based on the weight of the punch the Boxer makes.

  1. It's body weight.

  2. It's body weight- you're friend is kidding you on. Do you think there's such a thing as a featherweight punch?

  3. If you're on Yahoo7.com.au (not sure if yahoo.com has it), look under the Olympics header at the top, then go sports & boxing. Along the top there it has "learn more" on about page 4 or 5 of the animation it shows the weight classes at the weights that apply to them, no mention on punching weight... hope that helps

  4. i am almost completely certain it is purely on their body mass on the weigh in.

many boxers drink water or fast in order to weight the correct amount for the category before the fight.
