It means to retract, retreat or take back.  Here's a sentence using the word:  "Jane, who was always argumentative, had to back down when she met her match."

It means to back off and leave it alone. Its not necessarily cuz you're chicken. Its like if you're arguing with a friend, then you see its not going good, you start to stop..thats when you back down and just let it go.
