an investment via E*TRADE normally has a refresh every 20 minutes, but today the stock price stopped at 12:15. The stock shows an opening price for the day. Stops at 12:15, and nothing further. What would cause a stoppage in trading?

  1. Two possible answers.

1 - Did it "stop" or was there just no volume in terms of trades?  If no one is buying and selling, no trades occur.

2 - Pending news.  This would be a halt in trading and no one can buy/sell.  Halt's occur when news is coming out that is material in some amount of magnitude.

  2. Sounds like there is no action on the stock.  Check with yahoo financial and see what average volume is.  Before you buy any stock, make sure you check volume.  If a stock has low volume, you don't want it.  You will buy it easy, but be prepared to hold it for a long time or take a loss.

  3. name me the stock with datails of such hapenings  and get details with its reasons.

  4. each and every stock on nse/bse has a limit by which it can go up or down. the limits are 5,10,15 and 20 %. the stock can no longer be traded on that particular day when it reaches the limit assigned to that stock, whether it is upside or it is downside. supposing the opening price is rs 100, and the limit is 10 %. the stock will freeze at 110 or 90. it is called a upward freeze or a downward freeze. The only stocks who are not effected by these limits on nse are the ones which can be traded on Futures section

  5. This is because the stop would have hit the Upper or Lower Circuit in the exchange.

Depending on the value and the volume traded for a stock, the exchange might impose daily permissible limits for the price variation.  If the price variation exceeds this limit in a single trading session, then the trading in this stock might be temporarily halted.  This is called Circuit filters

  6. If stock trading halts, then it has reached either the upper circuit limit or lower circuit limit.

Each category of stocks has a different set of of upper circuit limit or lower circuit limit.

Limit is nuthing but a %age increase or decrease in the stock price.
