What does it mean if someone has a lump under their skin?

Is it a health issue? I've seen it happen on television shows and stuff like that and I was just wondering. It seemed to be just males, is that the case? I don't know. Please answer my question, thanks!

It could be just a benign cyst.  (I've had a couple for years.)  If it's not symmetrical in shape or changes shape and/or color, though, maybe you should have a doctor look at it.
