  1. compete with you, try to defeat you  I'm not the best skier, but I'll give you a run for your money  


  2. Old racing term I believe, it means that the competition is close, that you are having to work hard to get what you are after.

  3. Some one as throwed a challenge at you (anything) you are going to give them a "run for your money" it Means that they are not going to win easily, you are going to do your best to win.
