What does it mean if the standard deviaiton and the mean of a two data sets are close

eg.mean=3.40

SD=3.00

  1. I'm not a stats guy, but that means a typical score (95%) is within 3.00 of the mean.


  2. The standard deviation of a normal distribution means that in the 1st standard deviation 68% of the data will fall between 1 standard deviation, 95% of the data will fall between two standard deviations and 99% of the data will fall within 3 standard deviations from the mean.

    In this instance, 68% of the data will fall between .4 and 6.4

    95% of the data will fall between -2.6 and 9.4

    99% of the data will fall between -5.3 and 12.4

    The lower the standard deviation, the closer the data set.
