  1. If you're A&P you can work and sign-out your work (affix your name and stamp).

If you're a pilot you can fly that aircraft.

Both must be current on the said type-rated aircraft.

  2. Basically your pilots license will allow you to fly aircraft under a certain weight limit. When the weight gets above (12,500 pounds) you must be type certified in that particular aircraft. Extra training is needed for the FAA to consider you competent in the aircraft.

  3. Both pilots and mechanics have to be type rated to work on or fly a particular type of complex airplane.  As mentioned, this begins to be true when an airplane weight more than 12,500 pounds.

Mechanics have to be type rated to sign off on work they do on the particular type airplane, and also to be able to start, move, taxi, and ground test the airplane.

Type ratings consist of a certain amount of experience in the type, along with a practical test and flight demonstrations of your competence.  You have to know the emergency procedures and things like the locations of all the controls.

  4. This means you can fly it.

you know how to fly it

you know where everything is with out looking

    you know all the systems

you know emergency procedures for that plane

You have to understand all planes do fly the same, however some things do differ such as weight, hydraulic systems and so on.

  5. Type ratings are required if the aircraft weighs over 12,500 or is turbojet powered.  Many Learjets are lighter than 12,500, but still need a type rating.  It just means you are rated for that particular make and model.

  6. it means that u r trained on a specific aircraft
