  1. DNS stands for Domain Name Services.  DNS is what matches up URLs like http://www.msn.com  or http://www.yahoo.com to an IP address that is assigned to the server that feeds you that address across the Internet (or it could be on a local LAN or WAN).  

    Just like your computer stores cookies, pictures and information about places you visit on the Internet (so it doesn't have to download them every time), it also stores the DNS matches so it doesn't have to look these up every time.  By doing the command ipconfig/flushdns  it clears out this information (because sometimes it gets corrupted) and allows new information to be stored.
