  1. It means to write down what you think are the broader meanings, messages, ideas that the author was trying to convey in the story.  In case you didn't know, the thesis is the main point of the story, and the plot is what happens in the story.  Figure out what those are first.

Then think about what you got from the story.  What meaning did it have for you.  Could you relate to the characters?  Could you understand their motivations?  Why did they do the things they did?  How did they feel?  Were they sad, lonely, mad, confused, scared, happy, drunk with love, or just stupid?  Sometimes authors write about stuff that they feel, stuff that happened to them, and what they wish they did but didn't do.

Now think about what the characters learned, or what they should have learned as a result of what happened.. What the characters would have done differently had they known better.  There is a lesson in that story somewhere.  What was the lesson?

Now think about how well the author got the lesson across from the story.  Did he waste time talking about other things that were irrelevant?  If so, ignore those parts.  Write down what the story did to get the lesson across.

Finally, think about the things that you personally learned from the story.  How can this help you in the future?  If you were in a similar situation how would you have reacted before reading this story?  Did reading the story change you in some small way that you would now do it differently?

The most important thing is to engage yourself in the story, and ask yourself questions.  That is how you analyze a story.

  2. It means to ponder, or to think about, the main message the story has given you. It's to think about the meaning of the entire story. Asking yourself what the author was trying to tell you by writing the story.
