What does it mean to be Hispanic?

my friend and i were wondering what the h**l it meant to be hispanic. he was claiming that if you are Brazilian you are hispanic. what the h**l does it mean to be hispanic? and also, are Spanish people (100%) "white people"?

it means that the spaniards were too stupid to hold on to the continent, it also means that you are of spanish decent, yes they are from europe, yes they are white, but the conquistadores brought in slaves and mated/killed the locals hence you have all the different races and colors. no it does not mean you are just mexican. from texas on down its pretty much some sort of spanish decent. except from some litttle countries here and there. also when then n***s fled guess where they went???? south america of course hense you have so many blonde blue eyed people down there. check up on your history.

It means that a persons genetic ancestors came from Spain and spoke/speak spanish.Hispanic people are not white (caucasian),they are mediterainian.If you and/or your ancestors came/come from Spain,Portugal,Mexico, or any country in Central or South America,you are hispanic.

hispanic is someone who speaks spanish (language) regaurdless of race an NO brazilians are not hispanic cuz they dont speak spanish.

Hispanics are people who speak spanish as a mother tongue, or have ancestors who come from spanish-speakin countries. Hispanic is NOT a race, but is inclusive of many races. There are Black Hispanics (Celia Cruz, Alfonso Soriano, Sammy Sosa), White Hispanics (Gloria Estefan, Juanes, Julio Iglesias), Native hispanics (George Lopez, César Chavez) and Mixed-race latinos (Shakira, Rosie Perez, Selena, and most other latinos. No matter your race you're hispanic if you speak spanish or have a culture heavily influenced by spain or its former colonies.

Spaniards (people from spain) ARE WHITE! SPAIN is part of EUROPE, and thus they are WHITE! Why would spaniards not be considered white but Frenchmen, who live right next door, not be?

Brazilians are not hispanic because they do NOT speak spanish, they speak portuguese.

Lex, you smoked them. But yeah, Hispanic isn't a race. It's like someone else said, it's a blanket term used for anyone from Spanish speaking LATIN AMERICA, not Europe. Spaniards are not usually classified as Hispanics, because they're a European people

Spanish people are white, being that Spain is a European country.

Hispanic is really a blanket term used to describe people from Spanish speaking parts of Latin America. It is NOT a race, although it is usually looked at as a race in the US. Hispanics are made of many races including black, mestizo, mulatto, zambo, white, asian, arab, etc.

The typical Hispanic person in this country would usually be a mestizo, although we don't use that term in this country. They are all just grouped as one

Hispanic = Culture

Hispanic means to have the culture of a Spanish-influenced era.  Usually, it requires the Castilian langauge, and to an extent Roman Catholic culture. That is all, regardless of race.

Spanish people (most likely northern) are about 100% percent white, they are Europe of course!

Brazil ≠ Hispanic since they are of Luso-influence, Portugal not Spain.
