What does it mean to be a tool?

i heard someone call the prof a tool and i dont know what it means?

a tool is someone who mindlessly backs up something or agrees with something without thinking for himself.

Now I know I am getting old.  I was going to say that calling a professor a tool was a compliment, i.e. that the prof was like other tools the student had to learn--books, research materials, etc.  However, since two other respondents said it was a vulgar insult, they are probably a whole lot younger than I am and right.
