What does it mean to be "due for an upgrade" when you're talking about cell phones??

What does it mean to be due for an upgrade? After what do you have the option to get an "update"?? Do you HAVE to get the said upgrade when you are due for one?? I'm really confused, so could someone explain to me how these "cell phone upgrades" are all about?!?

I think it just means that your cell phone company wants you to buy a new phone.  Usually they give you a discount, so I would take advantage of it. I dont think you HAVE to buy a new one, but you have to tell your cell phone company that you're going to keep using your old one so that they dont just shut off the service.

your cell phone company may allow you to "upgrade" your phone to a newer one at a discounted price.    It's usually available when your contract is coming up, usually 6 months prior, depending on your cell phone service.

I work at an alltel agent store so for alltel an upgrade is available 90 days before the two year sevice agreement is up. It means that you can get a phone for the same price you would for a new contract which is usually cheap. By doing the upgrade you are agreeing to continue rhe service for anoher two years. You wouldnt have to do an upgrade. If you dont do an upgrade you are no longer under the contract. You will still be billed if you use it but their will be no termination fee.

There are software updates, that you might have to get.  (New things with the phone network, so you have to update to make sure your phone works).  This aren't that often and usually aren't required.

Sometimes you have to get a new phone to work with the cell network. That the phone is so old it doesn't work with the network.  This also doesn't happen that often, and probably now days less and less.  

Sometimes the cell provider offer a an update phone for a discount price.  This is usually just a way for you to get a new phone.
