  1. to challenge another individual intellectually...

    1.  one must motivate....encourage the individual to stretch his/her mental boundaries.

    2.  one must stimulate....apply effective measures to promote the desire to learn....this includes offering learning experiences.

    3.  one must praise all efforts to stretch mental boundaries

  2. To use logic and psychology to figure out a person and their capabilities and outwit them and win in a contest, duel, argument, scam, bartering, gambling, or challenge. Confidence tricks, but not necessarily always to gain profit.

For example contests, duels ,challenges are all pretty much the same, they are usually intellectual games such as chess, checkers, and card games such as poker or blackjack, where you need to plan strategically to win, may it be for bluffing or planning tactics and all the possible outcomes of each move you make.

Another example is arguments, a very common one we face almost every day, but not to an extreme intellectual extent, such as large debates, like those in the United Nation conferences. This is where we try to convince your opponent that you are right and they are wrong, this can contain  luring the opponent with things they want, or giving substantial evidence that your statement is correct.

The last example is bartering, and scamming. These are common where they use psychology to manipulate logic by setting you in distress so you cannot analyze properly and be won over. A very common one is advertising, though this might not be as extreme, it tries to convey us to buy their product by showing and/or comparing their products benefits, and not showing us the negative, we then need to think about the pluses and minuses of the situation before we act to buy the product (even though many of us may just buy on instinct).

Daily life is full of intellectual challenges, the difference is if you accept the challenge and fight for what you believe is correct may it be against it or for it, or to ignore it in general and follow the flow of things as they go by.

  3. Challenging someone intellectually means to exhaustively examine and discuss topics from many angles.  It's gives you new perspectives and forces us to ask questions we may not otherwise ask.

  4. Wow, it's all relative. If you're talking about challenging a child it's normally not very difficult. If you're a child that's trying to challenge an adult it's normally difficult, but children regularly ask tough questions... like, "Are ghosts real?"

But I think you're asking what it really means for a reasonably intelligent adult to intellectually challenge an equally intelligent, perhaps even more intelligent adult. And I think it means to challenge them to stretch beyond what they normally consider and really reach to come up with an answer. And this is a healthy thing. You've always got to keep asking questions.

I leave you with this quote by Socrates... "The unquestioned life is not worth living."
