What does it mean to find dead flies in your house? Along with some rat droppings?

I am a college students so I have little to no knowledge when it comes to house keeping. My parents are out of town, and both my brother and I take summer school at our respectively university(both pretty far away from home). I came back home for the first time in 3 weeks and I found a dozen dead flies in the kitchen and the dinning room. Though mostly in the dinner room adjacent to our large glass sliding door. And among those dead flies in the living I found some strange round shaped (dry and brownish) things, i thought it was just flies lavar or something. But then i found (the same thing) what appears to be rat droppings by the window (but the droppings are on the carpet) and staircase of my living room. What does it all mean? I haven't heard any squeaking noise or seen any chew through wires yet. Anyone have an explaination to this?

P.S. The house is usually empty (no one lives in it), since mid june til late july

Rats love to enter empty houses.  They won't squeak, much, if people return.  But they will stay.  As to the wires, most of your wiring is probably inside walls--so maybe they're gnawing away right now!

It's summer, and empty houses get hot--that may be the dead fly explanation.

Empty every drawer and lower cabinet in your kitchen.  If you find signs of rats, put all the food in the upper (wall) cabinets.  

Kill the rats.  You can use traps, or poison.  If poison, D-Con is a good brand.

Since no one is there to disturb them, the rats have found a lovely place to get out of the elements.  The holes that they are coming in can also let in the flies.  You need to find out where the rats are accessing the house and close it off.  You also need to set traps for the ones that are already inside.
