I was reviewing my insurance policy because we are having a baby this fall and want to know what to expect as far as the hospital bill. During my last pregnancy, (which was under a different policy and employer) it was very, very high so I am wondering what 0 percent coinsurance means.

  1. If is categorized as 'your share' of the coinsurance, you will pay 0% after the deductible. If it is categorized under what the insurance company will pay, the company will pay 0%. You need to be certain that there are indeed maternity benefits on your policy. Call customer service, and they will be able to assist you.

  2. Co-insurance normally refers to the percentage you will pay after the deductible. Co-pay is a similar concept, but is normally a dollar amount, not a percentage. These words can be tricky, so I attach links to the definitions.

If there were two numbers, such as 70/30, these would refer to what the insurance company would pay and what you would pay. With a single number, it should definitely be what you will pay. If you want to be sure, look at the summary plan description or talk to HR.

  3. It means that the insurance company pays 100% (you pay 0%) unless you have an inpatient copay or something.
