What does it mean to have a tear drop tattooed on your face?

My ex bf had 2 of them tattooed on his face. I've always thought it meant you killed someone, and I know he hasn't killed 2 people, so could it be something else?

i think a common meaning is suposed to be that you killed someone but i've usually encountered it meaning youve lost someone close, as i dont know any murderers!!

Honestly it means whatever he wants it to mean. As you can see by the answers you have recieved there is no one exact answer.  I googled it and I found websites that corresponded to all of the answers you recieved.  The bottom line is that he got those tattoos and only he knows what they mean to him.  For all you know they mean nothing and he just wanted them to look like a bad ***. I would say if he is an ex boyfriend then don't even worry about it.

As a lot of people have said, yes, in some cultures people do it to show how many people they killed.  In a lot of eastern tribes, headhunters or powerful warriors had the teardrops tattooed as a sign of pride for defending their villages against raiders.  These days, modern gangs tend to adopt them either to say they've killed someone, or they've served time in jail (one for each year, I think.).

While I'm not suggesting your ex was in a gang, I do think it's worth pointing out that he probably just thought the design looked cool.  A lot of people tend to get tattoos without knowing the real meaning behind them.  Or if he did know why, it was probably to make himself look tougher than he really was.  (If you thought someone had killed two guys, would YOU mess with him?)
