  1. It means that you are betting it to lose, so you stand in the guise of a bookmaker. If the odds against it winning are 5-1 and you "lay" it, you will lose 50 if it wins and win 10 if it loses. In order to "lay" you need to open an account with a betting exchange and deposit the amount of your possible payout. betfair.com is the best of these exchanges in UK.

  2. Jargon , slang:

To take on a bet - like a bookmaker.

    Also:

Lay Off, Layoff - Bets made by one bookmaker with another bookmaker, in an effort to reduce his liability

Doesn't sound like something that the ordinary bettor should

    get involved with.

  3. To lay a horse or any sport like greyhounds, golfers etc, means, you are actually the bookmaker. You can be a layer if you register with 'Betfair' I think the address is: www.betfair.co.uk (this is not a link)

  4. The previous posters are correct and the place to do it is on www.betfair.com. That's by far the busiest betting exchange in the world and it allows the public to lay horses in the same way as a bookmaker.

    Hope this helps.

  5. As far as I know, it is short version of "laying odds" or determining the pay out for wagering
