  1. in simple layman words it means that one should not waste their skills and do something that would be useful for their future.

  2. To become a respected member of society.

  3. It means 'to accomplish something in life'. It can be rising to a high position in your job, establishing a successful business or career, or to become famous in any undertaking. Or if you have a musical or singing interest, to focus and build up your talent and become a successful professional.

  4. Means to achieve something notable. Not necessarily become famous, but at least to be succesful.

  5. There is no real simple answer to that question, but making something of oneself can be building a reputation, getting an education, getting a job.

To some, making something of oneself has to do with succeeding emotionally, and building 'character.'

Hope I at least slightly answered your question.

  7. All excellent answers.  The idea is that a person can be a success, something valuable, or a failure, a nothing.  The expression draws our attention to the idea that we are only valuable, worthwhile people if we accomplish something notable, and that this requires effort, deliberate action.  By setting goals and working hard, I make myself a success.  I make something of myself.
