What does it mean to "Sync" your Ipod?

Question

I just bought a new computer, and plugged my Ipod in for the first time. It has asked if I would like to "sync" my music. Does this mean that the music on my Ipod will be erased and replaced with the music that is in my new Itunes library? Or, does this mean that all the music on my Ipod will be placed into my new Itunes library?
