What does it mean to "stand someone up"?

Ok well my friend said that his friend wanted to meet me, but stand me up?

What does this mean?

i think when some1 is stood up it means that some1 has told them 2 meet them some place, but never actually goes there. like a trick.

it means you make plans with someone, but don't go. and you don't tell them you're not going either.

an example:

Fred: Joe said he'd meet me at the movies, but he never showed up. He didn't call to cancel either.

Sue: Dude, Joe stood you up.
