  1. The distance the piston travels from bottom dead center to top dead center is the "stroke" a different crankshaft with with a longer journal placement will increase the stroke and therefore torque.

I simply means to increase the pistons travel where the "bore" refers to the diameter of the piston. The amount of area in the combustion chamber determines the cubic inch displacement (CID) of the engine. When you stroke an engine you increase its CID just like when you bore an engine.

  2. To modify the engine to increase the stroke of the piston.  This increases the amount of fuel and air that gets compressed and creates more power.  A common stroked engine is the chevy 350 modified to the 383.  It usually involves changing to a different crankshaft and sometime different rods as well.  You also have to grind areas of he block that need clearence for the new parts.  The 383 uses a 400 crank and various rod sizes each with its own advantages and complications.

  3. When you stroke and engine you are simply making the throw of the crankshaft longer, in other words you are increasing the length that the piston moves from bottom dead center to top dead center  This creates more leverage and thus more torque.

Longer stroke engines make better torque, but typically rev slower due to the lengthened stroke, there is always a drawback to every modification.

A 360 has a larger bore as well as a longer stroke,, you can build a 360 to 440 cubic inches, but at great expense ($2500-3500), all inside a standard 360 block.

  4. To increase the engine displacement by changing out the crankshaft connecting rods, and pistons from the original components.

The effect is to increase the volume in each cylinder by increasing the 'height' of the cylinder with a longer stroke.  The diameter is unchanged.

Recall that the volume of a cylinder is height X area: or H x Radius-squared x 3.14.  You can increase volume by increasing the height (stroking) or the radius (with a larger bore.)

  5. Change the crankshaft to one with a longer stroke. It increases torque , same principal as using a longer lever to move an object.
