  1. You need to have done more than just passed high school, you need to have some out with a good GPA and taken advanced or challenging classes.

No, the reason why they ask that is because they will eventually ask you for an official high school transcript (if you graduated within the past two years) to see if you are elegible for an Academic Competitiveness Grant. They offer those to student who have taken serious high school classes and got a good gpa from them.
