What does it mean when a golfer asks you, "What do you play?"?

He probably means what type of ball or clubs do you use.  Or he might be asking what your favorite type of wager is, or what your handicap is, or what set of tees you play from.

It could be a number of things.They are asking for your handicap. Maybe what kinda clubs you use or even what course you play most often.

if worded a little differently and putting a "at" at the end would make the question "What is your handicap?"

or maybe the person didnt hear you when you said "I play golf"

and was asking what sport do you play (which would be golf (just a guess))

At my club, " What do you play?" usually refers to the size of the bet, the format of the round, when presses are in effect, whether you can refuse a press, whether you are playing " garbage" and the amount for each "greenie" "sandy"."woodsie" " longie" or whatever junk one can think up.  As for the name of the ball , we usually ask " What are you playing?" If the balls are the same name or name and number the distinctive marking is noted or one of the players will change brands.
