  1. Horse colic is a belly ache, of course, but there're lots of causes.  Everything from stress ulcers to gas to impactions to twisted intestines and peritonitis.

Every colic is serious.  Many horses die from them.

The symptoms are also varied.  A horse that "just ain't doin' right" may have an impaction colic, and just seem depressed to its owners, but be in serious difficulty.

Other colics tend to be more obvious.  Sweating, pawing, rolling, getting up and laying down, biting at the sides, looking at the sides, collapsing, stretching their legs forward and back to easy the belly, etc.

So.  What does it mean when a horse colics?  It means, "Get the VET."

  2. It means that the horse has a really bad stomache ache and should have Vet care ASAP!!! Usually caused by eating bad hay/forage, or grain... Some times caused by eating or drinking, if fed or given water to drink too soon after being ridden. If severe enough, it can be fatal!

  3. If a horse collics it means they have a stomach ache, but horses can throw up, so just becomes worse and worse. Most the time it's deadly, but it depends how bad they get it. If it's real bad, their intestines can get tangled up, and you would have to put the horse down. Sad!!! :( :( :(

    Hope l helped!!! :) :) x*x

  4. It means they have a belly ache.  Usually from eating hay that has mold in it.

It can be fatal to a horse.  If they have a belly ache, they will get down on the ground and roll to try to get rid of the pain.  This causes their intestines to twist and that's fatal.

Grain and hay should always be checked for mold before giving it to a horse.

If a horse has collic, it's best to get some type of oil (veggie, castor) down their throats and keep them on their feet by making them walk.  This will make the horse make #2 and eventually get rid of the belly ache.  Just don't let them roll on the ground.

  5. Food packs in their stomach from eating too much, too soon.

bermuda hay, for example is very dense....eating it too fast can cause it to pack and the entire digestion system comes to a stop...its very painful and a lot of times is deadly.

  6. colic is simply a stomach ache.

horses can get it for thousads of reasons: injusting dirt, having gas, twisted intestine, eating bad hay, change in diet, and the list goes on and on and on....

the reason it is so deadly is because horses cannot burp or throw up, so everything that goes in the front MUST come out the back.

symptoms are laying down, sweating, bitting/kicking at belly etc.

cure for mild colic is walking and plenty of water. for severe colic a vet MUST be called, sometimes sugery is needed
