What does it mean when a * is in the front of a phone number?

i have a friend who gave me his number

and he was like

"dial it exactly like this"

it has this symbol in front of it: *

and 13 digits after it

i dialed it exactly and it worked

but i didnt want to ask him why it's like that

anyone know?

did it have a 67 after it? Cause if one dials : *67 1 234 567 8900 (the 13 digits) well your number well be blocked from being shown to his caller ID. People like to us *67 because they don't want others to know their number; for privacy.

he didnt want you to block your CID he wanted to make sure you unblocked your CID...

he had you dial *82 before the number didnt he?
