What does it mean when a person is "idle" on yahoo messenger? can i still talk to that person?

It just means they haven't posted or received messages in awhile;  you can still message them.

It means that they're away.  They haven't touched their computer in some time.  You can still talk to them, but they probably aren't there to answer.

They have a program open in front of them.

I think that it means that that person is away from their computer at the moment, this "idle" message usually comes up when the person has not had any recent activity on their computer for 15 minutes. You cannot talk to the preson because they are not there. But that is obvious.
