What does it mean when an acting agent askes what type of representation you want to be represented by?

Could have to do with the type of agent (like the other poster suggested) OR (depending on the context) could mean the type of Union.

A lot of projects are covered by both AFTRA and SAG- perhaps you have a choice of which union to work under...

It depends on the context of the conversation.  Perhaps s/he is asking if you want a theatrical agent, or one who specializes in commercials and voiceover, or one who does TV and film.
