What does it mean when i dog goes into "heat"?

i heard my dogs breeder say this to my mom. i was just wondering.

Its when she has her period just like a normal girl would. Thats when dog breeders breed their dog. They come into heat around every 7 months. Just put a doggy diaper on her or get your dog fixed if you dont plan on her having puppies =]

When a dog goes into heat it enters a fertile period where she is able to get pregnant. Female dogs go into heat fro the first time when they are about 6-12 months old and come into heat twice a year after that.  Heat lasts on average from 2 - 4 weeks, but only for about 5 days can she actually get pregnant.

There will be a bloody discharge during the heat cycle. During this time, female dogs are receptive to mating with males dogs.
