  1. It means the level of difficulty of your classes. Colleges want to know if you took the hardest classes possible at your school, which includes AP, IB and honors classes, or if you took "Food, Fun, and Homework-Free" empty classes. Some people take easy A classes to increase their GPA while other people may get a lower GPA because they took advanced classes.

The rigor of your secondary school record is almost as important as your GPA. Some counselors say that it is better to get a B in an AP or honors class than to get an A in a regular class, but admissions officers will say that it is better to take the AP class---and get an A in it.
