  1. OFFENSE:

LEFT JAB, RIGHT CROSS, LEFT HOOK, LEFT/RIGHT UPPERCUT.  This is where it all begins.  These are the five basic punches in what is called ''Textbook boxing",  meaning it's the fundamental way punches are thrown.  Of course  you have your Southpaw, in which case, everything is done with the opposite hands  (RIGHT jab, Left cross etc.)

Now, most punch combinations are derived from here.  Go back to the days before boxers threw combinations.  Combination punching is now thought of as part of the fundamental rules of boxing.

    DEFENSE:

    BLOCK, PARRY, DUCK, COUNTER,

These are some of the fundamentals of Defensive boxing.

From these fundamentals,  other different styles can be learned.  Imagine all the diffferent champions in today's boxing as well as in history.  ALL of them had to begin with the basic  "textbook" rules of boxing.

Now there have been MANY who DONT follow the "textbook" rules of boxing.  As great as he was,  Muhammad Ali is one of the LAST boxers you should watch if you want to Learn the "Textbook Fundamentals"  of boxing.   He has All the Talent in the World.   THAT's why he DIDNT fight the "Textbook" way.

Ali did many things "Fundamentally Wrong", such as holding his hands low, pulling back his head, rather than duck, block or parry, to avoid a punch.  The ONE thing Ali did OFTEN which is not only a CLEAR NO-NO, but an open Insult to your opponent's defense,  is the LEAD RIGHT.    To throw a lead right is a CLEAR indication that you have no respect for your opponent's defense or his ability to counter you.  He didnt mean it in a disrespectful or unsportsmanlike way.  He was simply THAT GOOD.

However, because of his great balance (something most heavyweights lack) he was able to get away with it.  Its what made him so effective and successful.   Many have gotten KO'd trying to do what Ali does naturally.

Roy Jones is another "Non-Textbook" fighter.

Now, on the other hand,  the fighter to watch, who does EVERYTHING By the Book is Joe Louis.  Joe threw the most Correct Left Jab.  Had the correct stance,  Got the most power from his punches,  Had a near perfect RIght Cross and Left hook.  The Uppercut was deadly.  He Blocked, Parried and ducked when he needed to.

Name a punch and I MIGHT be able to tell you at least ONE fighter who used it as well or better than Joe Louis.  However,  NO ONE used ALL the tools collectively, as well as Joe Louis.

For example,  The Jab.  Louis had a perfect Jab.  However,  Larry Holmes is often credited for having "THE BEST"  Jab of all the heavyweights.  Still,  Louis put together ALL THE TOOLS better than anyone.  Only Ali and Holmes rank at or above Louis' level with the jab.  ...........Right Cross:   No one did it better than Louis.  ........Uppercut:  Lennox and Marciano probably used it better.  Still neither had the WHOLE TOOL BOX like Joe Louis had.  For example,  Marciano RARELY used a jab.  NO ONE threw better combinations than Joe Louis.

Felix Trinidad is another of Today's fighters to watch if you want to do things CORRECTLY.  His speed and defense are about average.  However,  NO One in today's game uses the OFFENSIVE punches better.
