  1. It means a kid is schooled at home.

I personally home school  my son because we are a military family and move around more often than normal. Rather than having to put him into schools only to take him out a few months into a new school year, I take it upon myself to teach him.

We actually did not intend to home school, but we went from Germany to Mississippi, I don't have lot of faith in the schools here, so I decided to teach him at home.

  2. Just that, that they are schooled at home by their parents or some some other accredited person.

  3. I homeschool my 9 year old.

It started, officially when he was having serious difficulty at school with bullying.  The other thing was that he suffered from hearing loss and had to have surgeries to correct it.

The education system isn't set up to handle children that learn differently.  My son is very inquisitive and highly intelligent.  He has been tested and has none of the 'common' (sad to say) diagnosed ADD, ADHD, etc.  It isn't hyper, he is very much go-go-go.  He is just like a sponge that wants to soak up information constantly.

The schools, just aren't set up for learners like that.

They just want 'cookie cutter' kids that sit still for unreasonable amounts of time on hard seats, put up with waiting for 'this' student to 'catch' up or just ignore 'that' student and press on, leaving that child in the dust...both happen in a class.  I have worked in classrooms and seen it happen.

The schools expect all children to follow along without causing a problem...I am not talking about following the social and moral codes of conduct...I am speaking about the way that children are expected to be almost like little clones of one an other. " We all do this math sheet right now.  Now, take out your spelling and do this for half an hour. "

If a child shows extra interest in science for example, is the teacher prepared to side track for that one student and give them extra time because they are interested and so keen to have the knowledge...right then?  NO.  They can't.  They don't have the time to do that.  They have to complete a certain amount of work in a certain time frame.  How can one teacher take the one student and embrace his/her thirst for science while there are 25 other students just wanting to get on to another subject?

If a student wants extra time...there are those rare teachers that take time between classes, after school, etc.  Don't get me wrong, they do exist...but it doesn't happen as often as it needs to (and I am not at all blaming the teachers), the teachers are set up to fail in this area, just as much as the students.

If a teacher is expected to get a certain curriculum completed in a certain amount of time, and deviates from that course in the slightest, it can set the whole semester/term off.  There just isn't 'wiggle room' for the students that want, or need, the time to understand some subjects.

It amazes me that there are so many students that come online, for example, at the end of a school day (esp.) and on weekends, that are desperate for help.  I am NOT talking about the lazy, yes...I said lazy... students that leave the work for the last minute and want anyone to write a 10 page essay for them.  Or the student that scans the entire math assignment and is hoping that someone will complete it for them.  I am talking about the ernest children and teens that come online and ask for clarification of a problem.  That ask for someone to SHOW them, teach them, how to understand how to complete the problem (spec. math I see a lot of this).  If you show them how to do it, then they will know in school.  If we just answer it, it cheats the student. It doesn't allow them the opportunity to draw within themselves the knowledge the next time that they will need it.  [[getting off soapbox]]

Also, children are homeschooled for religious reasons.  The cost of a private school education may not be something that a family can afford, but the public or seperate (Catholic) school system may not be the options that the parents want to expose their child to.  A private Christian school is another option, but can be expensive.  Not everyone can afford it.

What it means to be homeschooled? A child/ren is permitted to recieve their educational needs at home.  This is completed, usually, by a parent/caregiver.

Why? Because we love our kids so much. (That doesn't imply that children that aren't homeschooled, aren't loved...we simply love our kids.)

*** Here is a question that I just don't understand, that I hear from non-homeschooling families...***

How can you stand to be around your kid so much? I have to ship them off to school I just need the break!

That is sad, but true.  I have to say, I have heard many moms say this to my face.  They just 'couldn't stand to be around their kids all day.'

    A sad reality.

    Thanks for asking!

  4. It means that than individual is taught grade school or high school leveled courses in correspondence to what grade they are in or should be in. They are either taught by they parents or a trained and licensed, homeschooled teacher.

Many ppl. are homeschooled b/c they could have diiscipline problems at grade schools that they were attending and they were so bad they the school(s) just could not deal with them anymore; or it could be medical problems that can delay them from attending school. Or they parents may just want them to be homeschooled and not exposed to what they think are "bad social influences" in schools today.

  5. Some people just perfer to have their children at home to teach them. Many reasons can occur, it depends what they parents thing. Examples I have heard are "safer" "more one-on-one teaching" and stuff like that.

It means that a "student" dosen't go to a public or private school, instead they stay home and learn. They have movies, books and everything to teach the kid a home.

  6. I'm home schooled and it means you learn at home. Your parents can teach you or you can take classes on-line or at a school or collage. I am home schooled because it is easier to get into selective collages because they want diversity. And home schooled is two words.

  7. to be taught by a parent or another adult or private teacher at home...people are homeschool so they don't get exposed to the bullies, alchol, drugs and negative things they might encounter in a public school

  8. Home School means just that.  School at home no secret there.

Why do we home school? Because we can! There are so many reasons why to home school that it would take all night to type them up.

  9. Homeschooling means that a student and their parents are completely responsible for their education.

Literally, it can mean any number of things.  It can mean that the student is taught by their parents, by paid instructors or tutors, by people in the community who are experts in a given field, or even that a student is self-taught in one or more areas.  The common thread is that the student is not educated through a public or private school, but through alternative means.

Some students do the majority of their work at home, while others take co op or concurrent enrollment classes.  Some high schoolers are involved in internships or mentorships in their chosen field, and others start college early.

Kids are homeschooled for any number of reasons, but basically they are homeschooled because for whatever reason the public or private schools in their area do not meet their needs.  They may have health or academic issues that are not feasibly met in a classroom, or they may live in a dangerous or mediocre school district.  They may not learn well in a group environment so they may need one-on-one instruction.  They may be gifted or learning disabled beyond what the school district can handle, or they may just be fed up with the drama and headaches of school.

Every family and every kid has their own reason for, and their own way of, homeschooling.

    Hope that helps!

  10. it means that they get there education at home or a community place. i hear children are better off bing home schooled.

  11. Homeschooling means that the parents have decided to take full responsibility for the education of their children, rather than outsourcing that responsibility to the public or private schools.

The reasons that people choose to homeschool vary from religious to academic to social-ultimately, it is because it is what we believe will benefit our children the most.

  12. Usually it's when parents think the "School system" is not going very well, or for religious beliefs....

That's all bull in my opinion....

    I hate homeschooling!

    It's the worst!

    There's not a day goes by....I don't regret it!

    =)

  13. it means they and their parents Know each other very well.

  14. That means they don't go to a public or private school. They stay home and learn from a parent or guardian.

Their parents might want them not to go to a school or they don't want to. There are many reasons why.

  15. Homeschooled means that there is private teacher who teaches a child at his or her home.

  16. The majority of home schooled children are taken out of school for religious reasons.  Many parents do not want their kids to learn science, only creationism. Some parents don't want to get their kids vaccinated which is required at most schools.

I took my son out of public school in the middle of 4th grade and home schooled him through 6th grade. He went back to public school for 7th grade. The schools he went to were concentrating on teaching reading, writing, and basic math. He was past that level, but the school was concentrating on Bush's "No child left behind policy". One result was that most schools have no programs for gifted kids. The gifted program at his school consisted of busing the kids down the road to another school and being given material for the next grade level (they worked on it one day a week, no homework).

He wanted to study science and history. He loves to read and was really bored with school. The teacher told him not to raise his hand because he always knew the answer. He took books to school to read and was told that they would be distracting to the other students. He was sitting there all day, bored to distraction. He did start working more on his comedy routines and jokes, but that is not what will get him into college. The school he is in now lets kids work at their own level, meaning they can do advanced work in their classroom.  Besides, there are no girls at home.

  17. Its when kids are being taught at home with an adult amd its usually better because since its just you, the adult can slow down or go over it as many times as you want! :)
