  1. Turn out, or turnout, has 2 meanings when it is used with horses. The first is obvious- it means turning a horse loose in a pasture or paddock to roll, graze, socialize and play. The second meaning refers to the way a horse is presented in the show ring or in front of a judge during competitions. Turnout, in this case, means that the judge looks at things like the cleanliness of the tack, how well it fits, the rider's dress and appearance ( do his or her clothes fit correctly, are they clean and pressed, are the colors appropriate, and so forth) how well the horse is groomed, and other things of that sort. There are some kinds of competitions where points are taken off the rider's score for incorrect or inappropriate turnout, or for use of improper equipment or tack and equipment which either doesn't fit the horse or isn't adjusted properly.  Dresssage, the sport I ride in, is probably best known for this, as turnout is something that all riders and horses are judged on.  There are also hunter/jumper classes which are judged this way as well.  Hope this answers your question.
