What does it mean when the Trans prog light comes on in the dashboard of a 1994 BMW 740iL?

The light does not stay on constantly. It comes on and goes off. When the light is on the transmission seems as if it is slipping.

How many miles do you have on the car?    Their automatic tranmissions from that era usually only last about 150K miles.  Have you been changing the transmission fluid regularly?  Keeping it short, pretty good chance your transmission is going out and will need to be rebuilt soon.

If you're lucky it is low fluid level.  Take the car in and have the fluid replaced/cleaned on one of those fancy machines.  Are there any leaks under the car?  I had the trans oil cooler line go on my 99.  Good luck!

It means the RPMs are going up and the car is not going faster.  Time for an expensive repair..

If its not low fluid the front pump may have gone bad as they all do sooner or later.  Sometimes you can get away with just replacing the front pump.. Don't waste money on a filter and fluid change it won't fix the problem or make it work just a little bit longer.. If you get it fixed sell if fast.. They are typical newer than late 80's to today BMW junk
