Question:

What does it mean when the heel of your foot hurts?

My husband has been complaining on and off about the bottom of his right heel. He says it hurts really bad. It used to hurt in the morning and then go away, but lately it has been hurting him all day. I know sometimes odd problems like that are linked to something else, lets say some sort of stomach issue. Has anyone had this problem? Any answers?

  1. Only a foot doc (Podiatrist) can really diagnose this heel pain. First place to look: turn over his favorite shoes. Are they evenly worn? (I suspect there is marked uneven sole/heel wear.) If UNEVEN, wear shoes that are not worn down; if not improved in 7-10 days, see a podiatrist.

If they're EVENLY worn, then he may have a 'heel-spur'. That's a bony-spike (arthritic) that pokes into his heel muscles when he puts weight on the foot. The doc can really help him. Just do it! Good luck! :)

  2. It could be he hurt his arch and the pain shoots to the heal.  It's called Plantar Fascitis.   I had this before after a long day at the zoo with my family last summer.   It usually happens when you wear flip flops as they provide no support for the arch, or from wearing ill fitted shoes.  It could also be from weight gain.   Since your arch has little or no support, the underlying tissue is stretched and can cause pain from the arch and to the heel.  If it continues without proper care, it can result in a heel spur.   Research them online.   Go to your doctor tell him where exactly the pain is, he/she will probably give you a cortisone shot, I dont recommend getting used to them.  Just try wearing better shoes and stretch in the morning and if you do get pain put an ice pack on it.

    Good Luck
